4 out of 5 stars this is not a windows 95 or windows 98 game. It loads from Windows 3.1 in dos mode   June 30, 2007

I am writing this review as I listen to the music of this game.. I am playing the game on windows xp with a dos emulator called dosbox and use a front loader called dos shell written by loonies software. the dosbox emulator can be picked up as free source from a developers site called Source Forge on the internet, the dos shell v 1.4 can be had from Loonies Software Group web site, also for free. Word of caution, this game needs dos emulation and dosbox will not run on windows 95, windows 98, windows millennium, or windows 2000, it requires windows xp and I have it from a good source that dosbox will run some games on windows vista, although I have not tested it myself. This is a great game in the old turn based strategy genre. I consider it far better than any civilization games I have played for the following reason; It allows strategic play using large armies with a multitude of unique units, and, tactical play once battles are joined. Tactical play enables you to exploit the strengths of your units and the weaknesses of your opponent. It also allows you to use a combined arms effect and maneuver to out wit and defeat an enemy that might seam to have the numerical and strength advantage. There are only a handful of such games that give this kind of detail to tactical battles during strategic maneuver. I rated this game a 5 for game play for this very reason.. even after 12 years of ownership this game is still one of my top 10s, a true classic. This game can be played without the cd, straight from the hard drive, if you set it up correctly. dos box has a configuration file that you can open with windows note pad and is very straight forward and forgiving. If you play from the cd you can add lines to the bottom of the dosbox configuration file like an autoexec.bat. This is one I use "mount d e:\-t cdrom" to get dosbox to read my cdrom drive where e is the letter of my cdrom drive. I rated the game overall as a 4 only because the graphics are all very old and have only a small amount of detail. Of course, this is like complaining about a bad book binding when you're reading Silas Marner by George Eliot, I guess what I am saying is, this is a great game!! Ohh.. one last thought, a web site called abandonia has a patch for the latest version of the game v1.31 if the version for sale is 1.2 or older you may need the patch to eliminate a few bugs. Enjoy!! I will list out my homebuild for you, it is a modest gamer and plays this game great on dosbox at core=dynamic, cycles=5000 , memsize=32, sbtype=sbpro2,sbbase=220, irq=5,dma=1,hdma=5. My system is intel p-4 socket 478 w/ht at 3.0ghz(prescott core), I865perl mb., onboard sound 5.1, 1 gig dual channel pc3200, fsb 800mhz, vid card is xfx 6800 extreme agp.(oc'ed), 22" widescreen samsung 2ms grey to grey.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite game, hands-down   June 10, 2006

I got Master of Magic shortly after it came out, and still, twelve years later, I have an annual month-long celebration of its greatness. I've played A LOT of computer games, and this one satisfies the strategist and perfectionist in me like no other. There are bugs, and the graphics show their age, but Master of Magic remains my favorite pastime. The manual is over a hundred pages long. I read the entire official strategy guide, maybe three hundred pages. Looking at what I just typed, I may seem a little sick -- this game admittedly inspires fervor. Days too numerous to count, I've woken up and gone immediately to the game, eaten my meals at the computer, and torn myself reluctantly away to nurse my headache and go to sleep.
It's a very good game. To converts, it seems so special that we're skeptical a newcomer could fully appreciate it. Why would an outsider want to tackle the fairly steep learning curve? The in-game "tooltips" are great, and the difficulty scaling and impressive number of tactical options mean that you can cut your teeth on one campaign and still find compelling challenges as you learn and experiment. Again, it's a very good game. One of the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best games ever   May 30, 2006

Not a title I would use often. Master of Magic is an incredibly deep game and still playable after all these years. Googling the title and abandonware you can find much better deals than the ripoff artists here. Also use DOSBOX to make the game work on modern systems.

4 out of 5 stars Master of Magic - A Revelation   March 22, 2006

A perfect game to spend many hours mastering. The graphics are a dated when compared to today's newer games, but the fun you have immersing yourself into your magicians role will be a most pleasant suprise that could be very habit forming. Made for operating with an older computer, there are programs to assist you with loading this onto your more advanced computer, but downloading these are not for the faint-of-heart. If you are lucky enough to have a friend who is more advanced in the skills of making computer software systems work, please do yourself a favor and acquire this game right away.

Prepare yourself..... call everyone you know..... make excuses in advance because they sound better. If you can manage to find a copy of this most awesome game, you will soon discover the truth of what I'm saying. There's just something about conquering the world that tugs at the heart of us all, and to make it even better, let's do it with magical creatures and designer weapons. I haven't even added all the upgrade patches that were put out to make it run smoother, and I still pick it over almost any other game on any platform.
So far, I have only found one little flaw in this gem, that being a requirement for more epanded memory than most of my computers. This has nothing to do with RAM or HD space, and until I found a computer already configured properly, I went crazy using boot discs to make it work. I have it on an E machines 667mhz, and that may be the only reason to keep one so slow.

Just one final tip: don't bother looking for this game at any store. I have been there, and they all said the same thing: You have to get it online, because it is no longer made.

Have Fun!
