1 out of 5 stars I Hate This Printer   December 16, 2008
I've had this printer for about three years now. When I first got it, I have to admit, I was enamored by the quality of it's photo print outs. I was printing out pictures of my girlfriend, my dogs, my neighborhood... pretty much everything I could find.

But as time went on, I found that I was using it more and more to print out documents, and this is where my relationship with the printer went right in the crapper.

I understand that HP has to make money off of the printer cartridges. But I have never had a product that has literally made me so angry that I wanted to throw it out the window, and it's all because of the printer cartridges.

First of all, there are six cartridges required for the printer to work. You would think that's not that big of a problem, but if you want to print out a 34-page document (like I do, right now) and you're out of "blue", you don't have the option to print in black and white. The printer can only print if it has all of the proper cartridges. Apparently this is to preserve the "integrity" of the system. This boggles my mind. If I want to "trash" my printer by constantly putting a strain on the black-ink cartridge, I would like to reserve the right to tell my printer what to do.

I was hoping to remedy this problem this evening. I had bought new cartridges for all of the colors (except black). It had been a while since I had printed anything, because I knew I was out of "blue" and there was no hope of the printer working without all of the necessary cartridges (especially blue).
Once I install the blue, I'm alerted that I need to replace the "pink" because the cartridge is past its expiration date...

WTF?

Once the pink was replaced, I was alerted that the "black" cartridge had also "expired"?...

I can understand perishables like milk, and juice have expiration dates. Even beer now comes with a "best by" date. But I don't expect that of my printer ink.

I consider myself fairly technically capable, and nothing infuriates me more than when my technological goods work against me, make my life harder, and make me have to adjust my habits to meet their buggy behaviors. What I want in a printer is this:
1. Print out pictures in color and black-and-white
2. Print out documents quickly and efficiently.
3. Don't fight me. If I'm low on a color, cut me some slack and print in black and white - or tones of grey, or all blue, or pink or whatever I have on hand.

The disappointment I have suffered at the hands of this printer have totally made the "ooh-aaah" reaction to the initial photo-quality absolutely moot. I hate this printer. I feel like it mocks me, with it's constant whirring and click-clacking after printing every third page; and it's warning messages that essentially tell me it can't print a black-and-white page without the "magenta" cartridge.

I hate you HP 8250. I hate you so much.

1 out of 5 stars Anything but HP...   November 9, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I deeply wish I had checked reviews BEFORE I bought this printer. It worked correctly for about four months and over the last year and a half has progressively deteriorated. The ink is too expensive, though you can save through certain recycle programs. The ink is also UNRELYABLE! Some of my photos have yellowed, and faded horribly over the past year; on both HP paper and Kodak paper. I know of no recalls, but somthing is WRONG with HP ink! The printer also slowly stopped feeding paper correctly. Sometimes it took far to many in and jammed, but most of the time it only takes paper when pushed into the rollers 1-by-1. HP cust. serv. said "try cleaning the rollers". Seriously? Do you think I didn't try that before writing? I will NEVER consider another HP printer, no matter how highly recommended in the future!

4 out of 5 stars Great Printer   November 7, 2008
This is a gteat printer. I have had mine for about 2 years now and printed 1000's of pages and Pics on it.

Am now looking to upgrade to maybe an Epson r2880 or the HP equivalent...

1 out of 5 stars just another means to sell color ink cartridges   September 8, 2008
I'm finally fed up with the high cost of HP Vivera ink cartridges and NOT BEING ABLE TO PRINT WITH BLACK ONLY if a color cartridge runs out. I'll just go buy a different product that will print with black only (when I decide that's what I want to do) because that represents the majority of my printing tasks.

2 out of 5 stars Ink System Failures   September 7, 2008
This product was great when I first had it, but after 2 years it had a paper jam and since then problem after problem has occurred. Now it only prints green, yellow and blue. which is worthless to me. Do not buy it, it is a wasted of money.
