I have read this book from my University library. I intend to buy it in a few months, when i start work. It has a nice autobiography from the author, Olley. His life is interesting and he explains how he started as an engineer in the UK and was involved in projects very different from vehicles! The war had an effect on his family life and his work.
The technical content of the book is very deep. With 2 years of Automotive Engineering background, I struggled to understand all of it but partly because the load from the library didn't give me enough time to read all the book and also i couldn't write any notes on it...
The maths are definitely useful for anyone wishing to model vehicle dynamics. The technology used is a bit old but on the other hand only employees of Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop etc will really have in depth knowledge of tyre characteristics. Tyre information is something as engineers we know is lacking in the public domain. It's like knowing the head desing of Ferrari's latest F1 V10 engine. It's well hidden.
I recommend purchasing the book simply because it is too long to read from any library and if you leave it on your desk, you may end up using it more than those silly books on hot-rod chassis design which are a load of rubbish. Even I can tell that most chassis books have terrible design (and i'm only 22). On the other hand Olley's book does not go into finite element analysis or space-frame design. It is more to do with weight distributions, steering geometries, oversteer/understeer. Unfortunately, many books like this have a title which is not realistically a proper description. The expensive books on chassis and powertrain are really nothing to do with space-frames or composite tubs. As a Formula Student member, I haven't found any useful books on design of chassis. Olley's book is useful for students and engineers wishing to understand how the geometrical properties of a chassis affect the suspension and vehicle dynamics. Lots of maths, nothing to do with triangulation or brackets or materials.
I am surprised nobody has reviewed this book before. If you like to be able to find the maths quickly without searching for it on the net (where it will be wrong anyway!), buy this book. Also if, like me, your memory is bad and you want to be good at your job. Much easier to have some proper books on your desk rather than have to find your University notes, that are torn/undecipherable/hidden in the loft.
